When you’re feeling stuck, your first intuition will tell you to get moving. I mean if you’re not going to move, nothing’s going to change… right? The thing is, it’s a lot more complex than that. Some people are going to make you feel worse than you already do by saying things like “Why don’t you just do something about it?”. They’re not wrong in saying that but for someone who is feeling stuck, these few words carry an immense amount of unwanted pressure and expectation which quite honestly, is more likely to have a negative effect than a positive one. So begins your internal monologue, “Yeah, why can’t I just do something about it?”, “I don’t know what to do”, “I’m so frustrated at myself”. None of these help. It’s a vicious cycle and it’s up to you to change it. Things can get overwhelming, so let’s simplify it. Time to get back to the basics, the ABCs of it all.

At Your Own Pace

You’ve first got to recognise that you have your own life to live, at your own pace. No-one else is living the same life. More often than not, we tend to compare ourselves with others and feel that we are lagging behind. “Everyone else seems to have their life figured out except for me” – that’s a common (and inaccurate) thought. Most people during the course of their lives have periods of time whereby they feel stuck. Everybody struggles with different things, it’s about learning to accept the struggle and what it has to teach you. Sometimes to move forward, you need to learn to rest, give yourself time and don’t rush the process – whose timeline are you on anyway?

Believe in Yourself

It’s a struggle, I get it. It could be your previous job, someone you know, or even something you did that caused you to lose faith in yourself. The first step to healing is learning to block out the negativity. The words you say to yourself are the most important so change your narrative, no more excuses. Instead of saying “I can’t do it” say “I can do it” or for a start, say “I’ll give it a try”. Don’t stand in your own way of achieving the things you want in life. Even if you don’t know what you want in life, find courage to try things because that is the most effective way to finding out what you want.

Change is the Only Constant

Change can be uncomfortable, part of it is looking and doing things differently. Get out of your comfort zone and live intentionally. Know that you always have a choice, you get to decide on what you want to do. Look at it as a new adventure, it can be intimidating but you know what’s really scary? Not doing anything about it.
