I won’t deny that some of these combinations will leave you going “NANI (what)???” but I would say this is a rather mild version of “Love it or Hate it” combinations. Let’s start off easy and work our way up to more intense flavour profiles – more interesting pairings to come!

Fries and Ice Cream

We’ll start off easy – fries and ice cream. Actually, quite a number of us would probably have tried this before as a kid. I know I did, and you know what? No regrets. The salty taste of the fries paired with the sweetness of the chocolate or strawberry ice cream sundae – Mmm, chef’s kiss.

Verdict: Love it

Oreo and Japanese Mayonnaise

Time to pump it up to the next level, Oreo cookies and Japanese Mayonnaise. Yes, weird, I know. You might be wondering how this pairing even came about. Well, my brother and I were having supper one night and he looked me straight in the face and said, “So hear me out… Oreos and Japanese Mayo”. That was it, the whole story. The key to this combination is the use of crunchy Oreos, ensure your cookies are not lau hong (stale) and use the Kewpie brand of Japanese Mayonnaise.

Verdict: Love it

Pokka Green Tea and Baileys

This is just one of those combinations that sounds rather odd initially but turns out really good – at least to me. I would say portion wise green tea to Baileys is roughly 1:4, that’s the golden ratio I go by. You can pretty much guess this but it tastes like a milk tea cocktail. So if you’re a fan of milk tea and a fan of alcohol, give this best of both worlds a try!

Verdict: Love it

Carrots and Nutella

I actually came across somebody on the internet recommending this combination, so I tried it. I have to say it was a massive NO from me. After taking the first bite, I realized what a big mistake I was making. The carrots gave off too much of an earthy bitter taste when eaten with Nutella that was just overpoweringly sweet.

Verdict: Hate it

Bananas and Lao Gan Ma Chili Sauce

I was eating a banana one day and this thought came to me out of nowhere. Me being me, I decided to give it a shot. Oddly enough, I’m quite on the fence about this. The texture combination was rather off-putting but the sweet and spicy taste is actually quite pleasant. I won’t give up on this combination just yet. Perhaps I will try deep frying the banana next time before having it with the Lao Gan Ma chili sauce, that might just do the trick.

Verdict: Undecided (potentially, Love it)
