On Sunday (September 19), boxing icon Manny Pacquiao announced that he will be running for the 2022 Philippines presidency.

The 42-year-old senator accepted his presidential candidate nomination by a faction of the ruling party, PDP-Laban, saying, “I am a fighter, and I will always be a fighter inside and outside the ring.”

While many boxing fans worldwide know Pacquiao as the man in the ring – Pac Man, he is not someone who is new to the politics scene. He has been in politics since 2010, started out as a congressman before being elected to the Senate.

Pacquiao’s acceptance of the nomination came weeks after he lost a boxing match against Cuban Yordenis Ugás. While he has yet to announce his retirement, many speculate that it was his last professional match.

The devout Christian boxer is held in high regard in the Philippines. People know him as the boxer who overcame poverty himself and donated millions to the poor. While he has a strong fan base, opinion polls have been topped consistently by the current President’s daughter – Sara Duterte-Carpio.

President Rodrigo Duterte is only allowed to serve one term (six years) as president under the constitution. He was nominated to run for vice-president.
