‘5 Answers’ is a simple, no-frills written series where we ask five people one same question and share them with you, the readers. A quick read aimed to spark conversations and share perspectives.

I asked 5 millenials this question, “What’s your greatest pet peeve?”

“Generally, I get annoyed when people are rude but more so when it’s towards service staff. It’s just something that absolutely gets on my nerves. So what if you’re a customer? It doesn’t mean that you can forget your manners or speak to someone as if they’re “less than”. Like seriously, how dare you. It’s something so basic that when someone does it, I just can’t comprehend why and that’s precisely why it irks me even more.” – Robin

“It takes a lot to piss me off to be honest, but I find that when I do get annoyed it’d be when people cannot stay in their lane. When it comes to work, I’m sure it is quite obvious. A marketing team wouldn’t tell the operations team how to run nor will the operations team tell the marketing team how to, well, market. Another example would be parents shouldn’t have to tell teachers how to teach and teachers wouldn’t tell parents how to parent. There’s a reason people are hired for the job so let them do what they do best. If you think you could do a better job, you should have signed up for it. Simple. Similarly in life, personally I went through quite a struggle some years back when my ex and I chalked up a debt of 40k in credit cards and my ex left me to settle it all. Thankfully I managed to pay it all back and I had gotten personally terrified to hold another credit card ever again. A friend of mine noticed that whenever I bought stuff I would pay with my debit card and he asked why he has not seen me with a credit card. I opened up about my dark past experience with one. This is where it got annoying. He started to tell me all about how it’s all about self control and started making light of my fears and about how I should not be afraid to get another one. I smiled and politely said I would consider, but inside I know I really have zero intentions of getting one. Stay in your lane pal. In life, you will find busybodies everywhere, you can’t avoid them. You can control how you react to them. But damn annoying la!” – Anne Noy

“I can’t stand someone eating bananas around me, mainly because of the smell. It’s like how some people can’t stand the smell of durians, for me it’s bananas. It’s okay if you fart or burp around me, just don’t eat bananas.” – Yiling

“People who just can’t park to save their life. Seriously though, stick to your own lot. It’s clearly defined and you still park outside of the lines. It’s worse when it’s a small car, you literally have no excuse. It’s like you’re asking to get scratches on your car.” – Pris

“For as long as I remember, I just can’t deal with people sneezing and coughing without covering. Hello, that’s just nasty and unhygienic – COVID or not. It’s basic courtesy to at the very least turn to one side and cover with your hand (if a tissue isn’t readily available), then wash your hand(s) promptly. I don’t want your germs all over me, is that too much to ask?” – Beatrice
