Each year is SingStat’s average for the year, and the last column its latest month. From January 2024 SingStat prices a new sample of stalls and items, so a change from 2023 to 2024 isn’t all price. Every item’s price each year: hawker food prices (CSV). Questions

Where do the prices come from?

The Singapore Department of Statistics’ Average Retail Prices Of Selected Consumer Items, which it collects every month for the consumer price index, averaged across hawker centres, coffee shops and food courts. The game uses its 20 hawker dishes and drinks: ten priced since 2015 (chicken rice, chicken nasi briyani, economic rice, fishball noodles, mee rebus, fried carrot cake, roti prata, ice kachang, kopi or teh, and kopi-O or teh-O) and ten more since 2024. Each year is SingStat’s average for that year; this year’s is the average of its months so far. Used under the Singapore Open Data Licence.

How much did chicken rice cost in 2015?

S$3.21 a plate on average, says SingStat. By 2025 it was S$4.14, 29% more. A bowl of fishball noodles cost the same S$3.21 in 2015 and S$4.27 by 2025.

What’s the dearest and the cheapest hawker item?

Of the 20 SingStat prices, in 2025 the dearest was chicken chop, S$7.80 a plate on average, then chicken nasi briyani at S$6.92. The cheapest was a cup of kopi-O or teh-O, S$1.19, then a plain roti prata at S$1.27 a piece.

Why did chicken rice get cheaper in 2024?

It didn’t really. In January 2024 SingStat moved to a new basket of stalls and items for the consumer price index, and it says prices from then aren’t a pure measure of price changes from before. Four items came out cheaper in 2024 than in 2023: kopi-O or teh-O, chicken rice (S$4.15 to S$4.08), economic rice (S$3.82 to S$3.70) and roti prata. In the game they count as they are.

How are the pairs picked?

At random, by how far apart the two prices are. The first pair is about 50% apart; each right answer brings the next pair closer, to about 20% by a streak of 5, about 11% by 10 and around 6% after that. An item can face itself in another year. Nothing comes up twice in a run.

How is a guess scored?

A price within 3% of SingStat’s average gets 10 points, and each 3% further off one point less, down to none from 30% off. A year spot on gets 10 points (or any year the dish cost exactly that), a year off 6, two years off 3 and three years off 1. Ten rounds, so 100 at most.

How does the daily round work?

The date in Singapore picks the ten pairs, so everyone gets the same ones that day and can compare scores. They start easy and end tough. A new set comes at midnight.

Is it what my stall charges?

Not exactly: it’s an average over many stalls, and every stall sets its own price. SingStat finds food courts usually charge more than hawker centres for the same dish.
