How postal districts work

A Singapore postal code has six digits, like 238123. The first two are the postal sector (23), and the last four are the delivery point in that sector. Each sector belongs to one of 28 postal districts, the “D09” and “D15” in property listings:

Questions

Why do property listings say D10 or D15?

Property listings and URA’s property statistics group homes by postal district. URA’s Core Central Region, for example, is postal districts 9, 10 and 11 plus the Downtown Core and Sentosa (URA on data.gov.sg).

Are the place names the district’s boundaries?

No. They’re URA’s general locations, a rough guide to what each district covers. Only the first two digits of the postal code decide the district.

Is a postal district the same as a planning area or an HDB town?

No. Postal districts are groups of SingPost’s postal sectors. URA’s planning areas and HDB’s towns are other ways of dividing up Singapore, with their own boundaries, so a place can share a name without sharing the ground.

Does a district mean the postal code exists?

No: the district comes from the first two digits only. To find the address for a full postal code, look it up on SingPost or OneMap.

Is the postal code I type sent anywhere?

No. A postal code can point to someone’s home, so it’s worked out in your browser: it isn’t sent to us or anyone else, and it never goes into the page’s address.
